While touring Kingdom Of Madness in Spain, supporting Gabrielle de Val, it soon became apparent that KoM singer Chris Dando was a really special vocal talent. The life he gave to those early Magnum songs was amazing, especially his heavier interpretation of the Magnum classic ‘Kingdom of Madness’.
Those thoughts remained in the memory of executive producer and lyricist Bruce Mee (Circle Of Friends/Gabrielle de Val/Sign Of the Wolf), so when it came time to think about a male vocalist to interpret some of his lyrics, there was only one name on his mind. Thankfully, Chris was also totally up for this project: thus Brotherhood Of the Wolf was born.
Ah yes, that monicker. To be honest, it was deliberately chosen to create a link between this album and Sign Of The Wolf. Here though, the songs are less classic Rainbow/Dio and more modern Melodic Rock, but the underlying connection is Mee’s lyrics and melodies.
Working together with Tommy Denander and these songs, Brotherhood of the Wolf truly believe they have created something very special, for fans of both traditional Heavy Metal and Melodic Rock.
Mee’s inherent love of creating updated cover versions, as shown on both Circle Of Friends and the Dragonlords albums, is once again demonstrated here with a wonderful cover of the NWOBHM Dark Star classic ‘Lady Of Mars’. The original has over 1 million views on YouTube and is one of Mee’s favourite songs from that era. Of course, he just had to add keyboards!!!
Also, going back to those wonderful live versions Chris sang for Kingdom Of Madness, the band really had to have an updated, heavier version of that classic Magnum title track….and he totally nails it!!
And the friendship formed with Gabrielle de Val on that Spanish tour has resulted in the glorious duet, ‘Maybe Tomorrow’. Written by De Val and Mee, this song is an absolute Melodic Rock classic.
All the other tracks are originals, displaying the love for classic Melodic Hard Rock and intelligent lyrics, many with an historical theme.
One thing Mee has always avoided in the past with his lyrics, is that typical 80s sexual innuendo. Here though, he figured to give it a go, hence ‘Down!’, which is a total 80s style sleaze-fest.
Mee, Denander and Dando hope the fans enjoy this album much as they enjoyed putting it together.
